About 56×56

Welcome to 56×56, a website and blog dedicated to all things photographic that I find interesting, ranging from photography books to the digital darkroom, from night photography to the square format, from scanning film shot from long-abandoned cameras as well as handling files from the newest Nikon cameras. I will also provide updates on my own photography. I hope you find it useful and enjoyable!

About Me

I am a fine art nature and landscape photographer specializing in nature and landscape photography, particularly in the square format. Jim NickelsonI live in midcoast Maine with my amazing wife and daughter.

After pursuing  careers in engineering and law, I have now shifted my professional focus exclusively to photography and fine art digital printing.

Until relocating to New England, I found early photographic inspiration in the wide-open vistas and classic grandeur of the American West. I know find most of my photographic opportunities and inspirations in Maine’s stunning mountain and coastal landscapes.

Why 56×56?

An homage to my first love in the square format (and something I still use today for much of my work) – the Bronica SQ-A series of medium format camera that produce slides and negatives that are 56mm square.  Coincidentally, and perhaps in a bit of premonition, my favorite bike as a kid was a Huffy with a ’56′ on the front plate.
