It is time for my monthly summary of upcoming calls for entries for photographers, particularly those in Maine and New England. This list is certainly not exhaustive and usually reflects ones of particular interest to me, but hopefully it will be helpful to many of you as well.
This remains a busy time of year — many calls come about in the first few months of the year, so there are quite a few from which to choose. Good luck!
The BlackBox Gallery in Portland, OR has a call for entries entitled “Landscape: Looking at Photography” due February 6th, another called “Grayscale” with entries due March 6th, and a third entitled “Shadow and Light: 2014” with entries due April 9th. I love that this gallery offers free printing and framing of selected work, too, keeping costs more reasonable if you are selected.
The Kiernan Gallery in Lexington, Virginia has a call for entry entitled “Expressions: Contemporary Portraiture” with entries due February 22nd and another entitled “In the Abstract” with entries due March 21st.
The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO has a call for entries entitled “Black & White” with entries due February 26th, and jurored by Jason Landry of Boston’s Panopticon Gallery.
B&H, the giant camera and electronics retailer, has a Wilderness competition with entries due February 28th (extended date). I haven’t seen this one before but I suspect they’ll get a ton of entries as the prizes are pretty large (i.e., African safari).
The Center for Photography Woodstock has their Woodstock Artist-in-Residence program for artists of color with entries due February 28th.
The Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, ME has two upcoming calls for entries, one for Artists Working with the Human Figure due March 1st and their annual Art2014 show with entries due April 1st.
The Aarhus Gallery in Belfast, Maine has their annual call for art for their “44N 69W: Radius Belfast” exhibition. All within 30 miles of Belfast are welcome, and some of the proceeds go to local food banks. Dropoff of work is from February 27th – March 2nd.
The Minneapolis Photo Center has a call for entries entitled “Mobile Photo” with entries due March 2nd.
The Vermont PhotoPlace Gallery has a call for entries entitled “The Art of Travel Photography” with entries due March 6th.
In a big one for Mainers, the CMCA has their next biennial coming up, and submissions are due March 16th. This one is highly recommended if you live here in Maine, especially with the reasonable $15 fee.
The px3 (Prix de la Photographie) in Paris has their 8th Annual px3 competition with entries due March 31st. This one is pretty prestigious, though their submission system and instructions leave something to be desired.
The California Academy of Sciences has their Big Picture Natural World Photography competition with entries due March 31st.
The Still Point Art Gallery has their next call for entries, which is unthemed, with entries due April 1st. Winners are in an online exhibition and some make it into their quarterly Still Point Art Quarterly (which is very nice).
The Viewpoint Gallery in New Brunswick, Canada, has their annual International Photographer competition with entries due April 15th.
The Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition put on by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, has entries dues on April 24th.
